J M Smith Corporation Logo

J M Smith Corporation developed out of the vision of one family and the hard work and dedication of many others.

In 1925, James M. Smith, Sr. opened a small pharmacy in Asheville, North Carolina. Over the next two decades, Smith established 16 other pharmacies throughout the Carolinas and Georgia.

At the end of 1943, Mr. J M Smith, Sr. established the Smith Drug Company in Spartanburg, South Carolina. He then progressively began exiting the retail drug store business as he further grew and expanded with wholesale drug distribution. He passed away suddenly in late 1951.

His sons, Jim Smith and Henry Dale Smith, continued to operate and grow the business. Jim Smith, an engineer and a pharmacist, had a passionate interest in automation. From mainframe and then into smaller computers, the data processing entity flourished. Jim Smith's visionary leadership laid most of the groundwork for what would become one of the largest and most successful privately held corporations in South Carolina.
